Reggie Ragbone

In a small, bustling town, there lived a man named Reggie Ragbone. To the untrained eye, Reggie was just an ordinary man with an extraordinary knack for turning discarded items into treasures. His home, a quaint cottage on the edge of town, was a wonderland of reclaimed materials and imaginative creations. Reggie had a peculiar philosophy: “One man’s rubbish is another man’s gold.” Every day, he would stroll through the neighbourhoods, collecting what others deemed worthless—broken furniture, leftover food, scrap metal, and forgotten toys. With each item, he saw potential, a story waiting to be rewritten.

One chilly morning, as Reggie rummaged through a pile of debris, he stumbled upon an old bicycle frame, rusty but intact. He took it home, cleaned it up, and transformed it into a beautiful garden trellis adorned with vibrant flowers. The townsfolk marvelled at his creations, but his unwavering generosity set Reggie apart. Whenever he found good food but no longer sellable—day-old bread, overripe fruit, or surplus vegetables—he would gather it all and prepare meals for those in need. He opened his door to the less fortunate, inviting them to share in his bountiful table. Reggie believed no one should go hungry, and he made it his mission to ensure everyone in town had enough to eat.

Reggie’s reputation grew, and soon, people began to bring their unwanted items to him, knowing they would find new life under his care. Children would visit his home to watch him work, their eyes wide with wonder as he crafted toys from scraps or built makeshift shelters for stray animals. Reggie became a beloved figure, a beacon of hope and creativity in a world that often overlooked the value of what was discarded. As years passed, the town transformed, inspired by Reggie’s vision. Community gardens sprouted, workshops on recycling and upcycling were established, and neighbours began to share their resources more willingly. Reggie had ignited a spark of creativity and kindness that spread like wildfire.

One day, while sorting through a pile of items, Reggie found a tattered book filled with stories of adventure and friendship. He decided to host a storytelling night, inviting everyone to gather around his fire pit. The warmth of the flames flickered against the backdrop of laughter and conversation as neighbours shared their tales and dreams. Reggie’s heart swelled with joy; he had created a home for himself and a community that thrived on sharing and sustainability. Looking around, he realized that his treasure was not merely the items he salvaged but the connections he fostered and the lives he touched. And so, Reggie Ragbone continued to live his life as a humble man with a golden heart, ensuring that nothing ever went to waste and that no one ever went hungry. In a world often focused on excess, he reminded everyone that true wealth lies in generosity, creativity, and the bonds we share.

YSTRADGYNLAIS CREATIVE WRITING GROUP – FESTIVE TALES TOUR

It is an absolute pleasure and most satisfying to facilitate this diverse group of writers. Some members have never written stories since school. The group has been running for three years and is based at Ystradgynlais Library. The membership, aged 23 to 83, is diverse, and we pride ourselves on inclusivity. In 2023, we published the first ‘Anthology of Collected Stories – 500 Words’ https://amzn.eu/d/7Nu5xQF and look forward to publishing Volume 2 in early 2025. The National Lottery Community Fund supported the group with a Development Grant in the summer of this year. The award was presented by Carole Morgan Hopkin, artist, author and poet.

A Creative Writing competition for all ages helped to increase interest in story-telling, and there is yet another in the wings. Guest authors drop in every six weeks and share their journey as writers, and we visited the Hay Literature Festival this year.

And so we ended this year with a Festive Tales Tour and had the honour of performing the group’s work at the Pontardawe Heritage and Visitor Centre and in the ancient 6th Century Llangwig Church. The tour began for a home audience at Ystradgynlais Library.

Transformation of Victor

Once, in a bustling town, there lived a man named Victor. He was known for his sharp tongue and bitter demeanour. Victor had built a fortress of solitude around himself, convinced that the world was filled with selfishness and cruelty. He scowled at children playing in the streets, rolled his eyes at neighbours who greeted him, and scoffed at the joy of others. To him, happiness was a façade that masked the harsh realities of life. One dreary day, as Victor wandered through the market, he overheard a group of villagers discussing a charity event to help the local orphanage. They spoke passionately about how they could make a difference in the lives of children who had lost everything. Victor rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath,

“Why bother? Nothing ever changes.”

Later that evening, as he returned home, Victor stumbled upon a small, injured dog lying in the alley. Instead of helping, he turned away, thinking,

“It’s not my problem.”

However, the dog’s whimpering tugged at something deep inside him. Against his better judgment, he approached the creature. Its big, sad eyes seemed to plead for compassion. With a reluctant sigh, Victor picked up the dog and took it to the vet. Sitting in the waiting room, he watched families come in and out, each filled with love and concern for their pets. For the first time, he felt a flicker of something he hadn’t experienced in years: connection. After treating the dog, Victor named him Max and took him home. Over the following weeks, Max’s joyful antics began to chip away at Victor’s hardened heart. The way the dog wagged his tail, greeted him at the door and curled up beside him at night slowly transformed Victor’s world. He found himself smiling more, laughing at Max’s playful nature, and even taking him on walks where he encountered friendly neighbours.

One day, as they strolled through the park, Victor noticed a group of children playing with a makeshift soccer ball. They invited him to join, and to his surprise, he felt a warmth spread through him as he kicked the ball back and forth. He felt the joy of being part of something larger than himself for the first time. While reflecting on his life that afternoon, Victor realized how much he had missed by shutting himself away from the world. The more he opened up to others, the more he discovered kindness and generosity were alive and well despite his previous beliefs. Fueled by this revelation, Victor channelled his energy into helping others. He joined the charity event he had once derided, bringing Max along as a companion. Together, they raised funds for the orphanage, and Victor found joy in giving back. The children adored Max, and their laughter filled his heart with warmth.

As the months passed, Victor transformed from a selfish recluse into a beloved community member. He learned that by opening his heart, he could change his own life and bring others happiness. The world he once hated became a place of wonder, full of connections and love. In the end, Victor learned that sometimes, it takes a little kindness—in whatever form it may come—to change one’s perspective and find happiness in the world. And so, with Max by his side, he embraced life with open arms, forever grateful for the lesson he’d learned.

Crystal Staff of Eternity

Once upon a time, in a distant galaxy far beyond our reach, there existed a powerful artefact known as the Crystal Staff of Eternity. This staff was said to possess unimaginable magical properties, able to cure any illness or affliction that plagued the cosmos. Legends spoke of its origins, tracing back to the creation of the universe itself, forged from the very essence of the stars by ancient beings of immense power. The Crystal Staff was guarded by the wise and benevolent Council of Elders, a group of beings from different species dedicated to maintaining peace and harmony across the galaxy. They understood the incredible responsibility of wielding such a powerful artefact and vowed to use its magic only for the greater good of all.

As time passed, great darkness began to spread throughout the cosmos. Countless worlds were ravaged by war, disease, and suffering, threatening to tear apart the delicate balance that held the galaxy together. The Council of Elders knew they must act swiftly to prevent total destruction. In a moment of desperation, the Council decided to use the power of the Crystal Staff to heal the sick and bring peace to the warring factions. They journeyed to the galaxy’s heart, where the staff lay dormant, awaiting its next wielder. With a solemn ceremony, the Council members each placed a hand on the staff, channelling their collective energy and will into the crystal. A blinding light erupted from the staff, spreading outwards in all directions, touching every corner of the cosmos. In an instant, all illness and suffering were swept away, replaced by a wave of healing energy that restored balance and harmony to every living being.

As the light faded, a profound change swept over the galaxy. Species that had once been enemies now stood side by side, united in their newfound peace and understanding. The Crystal Staff had not only cured physical ailments but had also healed the wounds of the soul, bringing about a new era of cooperation and compassion. From that day on, the Crystal Staff of Eternity remained in the care of the Council of Elders, a symbol of hope and unity for all who looked upon it. And though challenges would continue to arise, the galaxy knew that as long as the staff shone bright, there would always be a beacon of light to guide them through the darkness.
