A Tortoise’s Journey to the Rainbow

In a lush, green valley lived a tortoise named Tilly. Tilly was no ordinary tortoise; she had a heart full of dreams and a spirit that yearned for adventure. While her friends were content to bask in the sun and munch on leaves, Tilly gazed longingly at the distant mountains, where she believed a vibrant rainbow arched across the sky, promising treasures of beauty and wonder.

One sunny morning, after a night of gentle rain that had left the air crisp and fresh, Tilly decided it was time to embark on her journey. With a determined glint in her eye, she set off toward the mountains, her small legs moving as swiftly as possible. She encountered a wise old owl perched on a branch along the way.

“Where are you off to in such a hurry, dear Tilly?” the owl hooted, tilting his head curiously.

“I’m going to find the rainbow!” Tilly declared, her voice filled with excitement. “I’ve heard stories of its colours and magic and want to see it myself!”

The owl chuckled softly.

“The rainbow is not just a sight to behold; it is a journey filled with lessons and experiences. Are you ready for what lies ahead?”

Tilly nodded enthusiastically, her mind made up. With a wise nod, the owl offered her advice:

“Remember, dear Tilly, the journey may be slow, but patience and perseverance are your greatest allies.”

As Tilly continued on her path, she faced various challenges. The first was a steep hill, daunting and tall. Many of her friends had told her it was impossible for a tortoise to climb such a slope. Yet, Tilly recalled the owl’s words and climbed slowly but surely. With each step, she focused on the view around her—the wildflowers blooming and the vibrant insects buzzing. Before she knew it, she reached the top, her heart swelling with pride. Next, she encountered a wide, bubbling stream. The water rushed past with a fierce energy, and Tilly felt doubt wash over her. She thought about turning back, but then she remembered the stories of the rainbow and the beauty that awaited her.

Gathering courage, Tilly searched for a safe place to cross. She found a fallen log that bridged the gap and, with careful precision, made her way across. Each wobble made her heart race, but she focused on her goal and soon stood on solid ground again. As Tilly ventured deeper into the mountains, she began to feel the weight of fatigue. The sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows and painting the world in deep oranges and purples. Just as she was about to rest, she spotted a flicker of light in the distance. Could it be the rainbow? With renewed vigour, Tilly pressed onward. She climbed the final ridge and gasped at the breathtaking sight before her. The sky was painted brilliant colours, cascading down in a magnificent arc. But what struck her most was not just the beauty of the rainbow but how it seemed to connect the earth and sky, bridging the gap between the two worlds. Tilly realized the journey had gifted her more than just seeing the rainbow. She had discovered her own strength, learned to be patient, and embraced the value of perseverance. Standing beneath the rainbow, she felt a deep sense of fulfilment, knowing that she had risen to every challenge along the way. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the valley, Tilly returned home, her heart light and her spirit soaring. She couldn’t wait to share her adventure with her friends, telling them not just about the rainbow but about the lessons she had learned on her journey. From that day on, Tilly became known not only as the tortoise who saw the rainbow but also as a symbol of determination and hope. Whenever a rainstorm passed through the valley, Tilly would look to the sky, knowing that every challenge could lead to something beautiful, just waiting to be discovered.

As Tilly made her way back home, she reflected on her adventure. Each challenge faced had shaped her in ways she hadn’t anticipated. The steep hill had taught her about resilience; the rushing stream had shown her the importance of finding creative solutions. The journey was not just about reaching the rainbow but understanding herself along the way. When Tilly finally returned to her cosy spot in the valley, her friends gathered around, eager to hear her tale. They were curious about the rainbow, of course, but even more about the journey that had brought her there.

“Tilly, what was it like to see the rainbow?” asked Benny, a young rabbit with big, inquisitive eyes.

“It was breathtaking,” Tilly replied, her voice filled with warmth. “But the journey to get there was just as important. I learned to climb when things seemed impossible, to cross when I felt afraid, and most importantly, to keep going even when I wanted to give up.”

Her friends listened intently, their imaginations running wild. They envisioned the vibrant colours arcing across the sky, shimmering in the sunlight. Tilly’s words painted a picture of adventure, courage, and the beauty of perseverance. Encouraged by Tilly’s story, Benny suggested,

“Maybe we can all see the rainbow together next time it rains! We can help each other along the way.”

Excited murmurs spread through the group. The idea of a collective journey ignited a spark of enthusiasm in Tilly’s heart. She realized sharing her experience could inspire others to seek their own adventures. With a newfound sense of purpose, Tilly decided to organize a little expedition. Over the next few days, she gathered her friends—each with their unique strengths and talents. There was Lila the squirrel, who was quick and nimble; Greg the hedgehog, known for his clever problem-solving; and Maya the bluebird, who could scout from the sky.

On the day of their adventure, the air was fresh, and the sun shone brightly, hinting at the possibility of rain later. Tilly felt excited as they set off, her heart pounding with anticipation. Together, they faced the same hill Tilly had climbed alone. This time, the group worked as a team, encouraging one another and sharing laughter as they ascended. When they reached the summit, the view was even more beautiful than Tilly had remembered. The valley stretched below them, a patchwork of greens and browns dotted with wildflowers. Standing together, the friends felt a sense of unity and accomplishment. As they continued their journey, they reached the bubbling stream. Tilly shared how she had crossed it alone, but this time, they worked together to create a makeshift bridge using fallen branches and stones. With teamwork and ingenuity, they crossed safely, cheering when the last friend made it to the other side. The group pressed on, sharing stories and singing songs, their spirits high. They encountered various challenges, but each one brought them closer together. They learned to communicate, to rely on each other, and to celebrate each small victory. Finally, after a day filled with laughter and adventure, they reached the spot where Tilly had seen the rainbow. As they settled down to rest, dark clouds gathered in the sky. Tilly felt a thrill of anticipation. Would the rainbow appear again?

Moments later, the rain began to fall, gentle at first, then heavier. The friends huddled together, laughing as they got drenched. But then, as if on cue, sunlight broke through the clouds. They looked up in awe as a magnificent rainbow emerged, stretching across the sky in all its glory. Tilly’s heart swelled with joy. It was not only a beautiful sight but a culmination of their shared experiences. The rainbow seemed to symbolize their journey, with each colour representing the lessons they had learned and the bonds they had formed. As they stood beneath the vibrant arch, Tilly said,

“This isn’t just my rainbow. It belongs to all of us. We faced challenges together, and we found beauty together.”

Her friends nodded, understanding the depth of her words. They realized the journey had transformed them, fostering a camaraderie that would last forever. From that day forward, Tilly and her friends embarked on many more adventures, each teaching them new lessons about bravery, friendship, and the joys of exploration. The rainbow became a cherished symbol of their unity, reminding them that together, they could overcome any obstacle and discover the beauty that awaited them, both in the world and within themselves. And so, the tortoise and her friends continued to seek rainbows, knowing that every challenge was a step toward something extraordinary.

A She-Wolf’s Vision: The Tale of the Crystal Vase

Once upon a time, a majestic grey she-wolf named Shadow lived in the heart of a dense, mystical forest with her pups. Shadow was known far and wide for her keen intelligence and sharp instincts. She roamed the forest with grace and power, respected by all the creatures that called it their home. One day, while exploring a hidden glade deep within the forest, Shadow stumbled upon a mysterious crystal vase resting on a pedestal of ancient stone. Intrigued by its shimmering surface and the emanating whispers of magic, Shadow cautiously approached the crystal vase. As she gazed into its depths, the crystal vase began to glow with an ethereal light, swirling with images of distant lands and unknown adventures.

Shadow was entranced by what she saw, visions of a world beyond the forest flashing before her eyes. The crystal ball spoke to Shadow in a gentle, melodious voice, offering her a glimpse into her own future and the challenges that lay ahead. It revealed a great darkness that threatened to consume the forest, a shadowy force that sought to bring chaos and destruction to all that Shadow held dear. Determined to protect her home and pups, Shadow vowed to uncover the source of this darkness and end it once and for all. With the guidance of the crystal vase, she set out on a quest that would test her courage, strength, and unwavering resolve. Through trials and tribulations, Shadow faced fierce adversaries and daunting obstacles, but she never wavered in her quest to save the forest from the encroaching darkness. With each challenge she overcame, the crystal vase shimmered brighter, its magic strengthening as Shadow drew closer to her ultimate goal.

In the final battle against the forces of darkness, Shadow stood tall and resolute, her fur bristling with determination as she faced the greatest foe. With a mighty roar that echoed through the forest, she unleashed all the power she had gained on her journey, channelling the magic of the crystal vase into a blinding light that banished the darkness once and for all. As the light faded and peace returned to the forest, Shadow knew she had fulfilled her destiny and saved her home from destruction. The crystal vase, its purpose fulfilled, vanished in a shower of sparks, leaving Shadow with a newfound sense of wisdom and purpose. From that day on, Shadow was revered as a hero among the forest’s creatures, her name spoken with gratitude and respect. And though the crystal vase was gone, its magic lived on in Shadow’s heart, guiding her and the pups on new adventures and ensuring the forest remained safe and protected for generations. And so, the tale of Shadow the She-Wolf and the Crystal Vase became a legend, a story of bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope in the face of darkness.

‘Before It’s Too Late’

Mosquitos in February

Spring buds upon a tree

All so unnecessary

Nature cries to be free

Temperature up, now down

All growth is in a whirl

Ice melts, penguins drown

Mutating viruses unfurl

Give it up; give up all

Before it is too late

Writing clearly on the wall

Cessation from debate

Men stand, they talk

Whilst nature cries in pain

Give up cars and walk

Restricting aeroplane and train

All soul searching now done

The hour has come for you

Heat our winds and sun

It’s time for a change; so true

Politicians close the door

All this useless debate

Greedy talk no more

Before it is too late

‘MOVING MOUNTAIN’

2012 AND 2017, REMEMBERED

Through centuries-long, worked mines ran deep

Atop the mountain grazed generations of sheep

Cottages and houses, a village built all in a row

Standing over a century, through rain and snow

Mines long gone, buried, broken, deep and lost

Ruins, empty stones, dreams, an occasional ghost

In the sixties and eighties came rumble and crack

Our Moving Mountain coughed, trembled and shook

Rock and mud slid and shifted, boulders and slime

The hearth’s of many a family now lost in time

Penygraig slipped down in Two Thousand and Twelve

Left standing alone, frozen, perched on a precarious shelf

Water, as it will be done, flowed here and there

A drainage system in a state of mutant disrepair

Sewers and drains are there but almost forgotten

Gaffer tape and string stitching pipes have gone rotten

Now again, in Two Thousand and Seventeen

Fifteen homes soon to vanish in the mist unseen

Somehow, it just does not seem honest or right

A council can steal your home in the dark of night

From under your feet without a ‘by your leave.’

Corporate negligence makes you vomit and heave

Somehow, it does not seem right or honest or true

How can they do this to him, her, and you?

The Unlikely Trio: A Tale of Adventure in the Welsh Wilderness

Once upon a time, in the breathtaking landscapes of Wales, an unusual trio set out on an extraordinary adventure. This trio consisted of a courageous dog named Max, a clever cat named Luna, and a strong-willed badger named Boris. Each with their unique abilities and personalities, they embarked on a long journey that would test their friendship and resolve. It all began on a crisp morning when Max, Luna, and Boris met at the edge of a dense forest near the towering mountains of Wales.

The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a golden hue over the rolling hills and valleys that stretched out before them. Despite their differences in size and species, the three friends shared a deep bond and a thirst for exploration. With wagging tails and eager eyes, they set off on their adventure, their paws and claws carrying them over rocky paths and through lush forests. Max, with his keen sense of smell and boundless energy, led the way, sniffing out the trail ahead. Luna, with her sharp wit and agile movements, navigated the tricky terrain with grace and precision. Boris, with his burly strength and unwavering determination, provided protection and guidance to his smaller companions.

As they journeyed deeper into the wilderness, they encountered obstacles and challenges that tested their teamwork and spirit. They crossed roaring rivers on rickety bridges, climbed steep cliffs with sheer determination, and braved dark caves filled with mysterious echoes. Through it all, they relied on each other’s strengths and supported one another when needed. Along the way, they met a variety of creatures, from wise old owls to playful foxes, each sharing tales of the land and its secrets. They tasted sweet berries plucked from tangled bushes, drank from crystal-clear streams that gushed from the mountains and rested under the canopy of ancient trees that whispered stories of ages past. As days turned into weeks and the landscape changed around them, the trio forged a bond that transcended words and species. They became not just companions on a journey but a family united by a shared purpose and a love for the wild beauty of Wales. Finally, after many trials and triumphs, they reached the summit of the highest mountain, where a panoramic view of the rolling valleys and shimmering lakes unfolded before them. As they stood side by side, wind tousling their fur and whiskers, they knew that their adventure was not just a journey through the wilderness but a journey of the heart.

And so, the unlikely trio – Max, Luna, and Boris – descended from the mountains, their hearts full of memories and their spirits forever intertwined. As they returned to the forest where it all began, they knew that their friendship would endure, like the ancient mountains and valleys of Wales, standing strong against the test of time. Ultimately, it was not the destination but the journey itself, the bonds forged, and the memories made along the way. And so, the tale of the adventurous trio of a dog, a cat, and a badger in the Welsh wilderness became a legend, whispered by the winds and echoed by the rivers, a testament to the power of friendship and the magic of exploration.
