TIM WILLIAMS AWARD FOR PERFORMANCE POETRY

Tim Williams was a popular performance poet from the Welsh Valleys who performed at the first festival in 2015. Tim had been poorly in the past with cancer and given the ‘all clear’. Sadly in the Spring of 2016, Tim passed away. I created this award in his memory to encourage ‘performance poets’ wishing to become established, by creating a platform and audience. Shaun Durham, also living in the valley’s, sculptured an image of Tim from an aged chunk of beech. In partnership with Welsh Connections we facilitated opportunities for the winner which included, a recording and video of their piece, plus radio exposure, and opening the following years festival on the Sunday. The winner in 2018 will also receive television and social media exposure. Our winner in 2016 was Karen Gemma Brewer, a wonderful performance poet from Cardigan whose spellbinding delivery, dazzled the judges. She repeated her success in 2017 however, graciously decided not to compete this year. Since winning, Karen has gone from strength to strength, performing extensively in Wales, appearing on radio, at festivals and other venues. Karen has used every opportunity to launch her work and it is so rewarding to think that both she and Paul Hayes (Winner of the Song Writing Competition 2016) have achieved exactly what the competitions were set up for, a platform from which to launch themselves. It is interesting that in addition to now writing and performing songs, Karen has joined forces with Paul in a new venture, ‘Rakers Moon’. In 2017 she published her first book of poems ‘Seeds of a Dandelion, a worthy judge in 2018.

Our winner this year receiving the award is Ella Peel, a young aspiring actress from Llandovery. A stunning delivery of a powerful piece of writing, well presented and performed with great passion.
